Orthopaedic surgeons from the different parts of the North Eastern states converged for two day long 33rd North East Orthopaedic Surgeons Conference (NEOSCON) 2019-20 here, which concluded at Capital Convention Centre on November 30.


Hosted by Nagaland Orthopaedic Society (NOS) under the aegis of the North East Region Orthopaedic Surgeons' Association (NEROSA, the conference witnessed CME on orthopaedic trauma, session on spine trauma, hip and pelivis injury, hand and upper limb injury, NEROSA Gold Medal For best PG Paper (Donated by Dr D K Taneja), Free Paper Session, NEROSA Gold Medal for Best Basic science research paper (Donated by Dr Bipul Borthakur in memory of late Maikan Borthakur), Prof. KD Singh Free paper session (Tribute to Prof. KD Singh, pioneer in establishing NEROSA), NEROSA Gold Medal for best poster evaluation (Sponsored by Guwahati Orthopaedic Society in memory of Dr RN Chakravarty, pioneer in establishing NEROSA), Guest lecturers session, invited talks.


Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Advisor Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire in his address, stressed on the need to share and update knowledge with each other. He said Continuing Medical Education (CME) helps those in the medical field maintain competence and learn about new and developing areas of their field. He urged the doctors to take extra step sometimes for the patients’ sake because the sacrifices, kindness and responsibility towards the patients will never go unrewarded.


Dr. Vikeyie Losu, principal director, Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland also spoke at the conference.
He said that in the modern era, improvisation should be the key to meet the any situation when call for.


Stating that Orthopaedic surgery being a challenging field, he maintained that the conference offer good opportunities to share their achievements and exchange innovative ideas, the latest discoveries and experiences in this particular field of which the outcome will benefit the people of the north east region.


NEROSA president Dr. Irom Ibomcha Singh said that the conference aims to provide the venue to enhance competencies and skills through the impact presentations of the eponymous guest lectures and invited talks by the eminent speakers of the country.


NEROSA honorary secretary Dr Chinmoy Das said that the period 2019-20 was an eventful one for NEROSA as the association was able to implement many of its goals towards increasing the membership, activities and development of NEROSA.


He said that NEROSA membership has increased from 239 last year to 337 now.  “We are targeting 500 life members in the coming year,” said Dr Das.


He said that NEROSA Scientific Committee has been formed in 2019, with the idea of arranging its academic calendar, regularizing and indexing the association journal ORTHOSCAN and helping out with the regional events to be at par, (scientifically) with IOA guidelines.


Dr Das said that “Cadaveric Spine Workshop” will be held at Assam Medical College and hospital Dibrugarh from December 14 & 15 2019. An endoscopic spinal surgery workshop is planned for January 2020. Also, efforts are on to organize, IOA Pathshala for training of Orthopaedic Surgeons Operating Room Personnals by February 2020, NEROSA PG Instruction course lecture is scheduled to be held in Silchar in the month of March 2020.


Dr Das said that “Efforts are on to merge the IOA East Zone P G Instruction Course with NEROSA. This will be a huge achievement for NEROSA,” he added.


Organizing chairman Dr Neikhrielie Khimiao said that there are 19 orthopaedic surgeons in Nagaland at present. “This is the conference which all NEOSCON members look forward to in order to refresh and update one's knowledge and rekindle the close ties the NE states share with each other,” the organizing committee stated.
Through NEOSCON 2019-20 souvenir, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio urged all Orthopaedic surgeons to serve their profession with the fullest dedication, champion the interest of the patients and provide and advance the highest quality of musculoskeletal care.
