•    Dimapur presents erratic pattern

Dimapur | October 16

Nagaland continued to maintain a relatively low COVID-19 incidence over the past 7 days (October 9-15) with 137 new cases at a sample positivity rate of 2.9 percent. While the numbers would be relatively low, the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme’s (IDSP) weekly COVID round released on October 16 noted “a slight increase” in positivity from the past week.

Further, skimming through past data presented a bleak reminder of the days leading up to the second wave when cases increased and dropped in early April before gaining momentum by April-end.

More than 70 percent of the week’s cases were detected through random/self tests implying community spread, as stated by the IDSP in an earlier weekly update.

At the district level, Dimapur displayed an erratic pattern returning high positivity on three different days during the week. The average for October 9 was 7.9 percent, 10.9 percent on October 11, 7.2 percent on October 15, interjected by days in which it dropped below 3 and 2 percent.  The weekly positivity rate for the district was 4.5 percent increasing from 2.6 percent of the previous week.

As has been the trend, the district also accounted for 87 of the week’s caseload, followed by Kohima reporting 26 new cases. The tally in other districts was less than 10 with Mon, Zunheboto and Longleng reporting nil cases.

In terms of COVID patients beating the virus, 180 recoveries were reported from across the state during the past 7 days with Dimapur accounting for 119 of the total. Kohima reported 26 recoveries, Mokokchung- 15, Phek- 9, Kiphire- 4, Wokha- 3, Longleng- 2, Mon & Tuensang- 1 each, Peren and Zunheboto- nil. As on October 15, Longleng and Zunheboto had not a single active case, while Dimapur had 123 active cases.

There were 5 COVID fatalities- 2 each in Dimapur and Kohima and 1 in Phek. The state’s fatality rate of 2.09 percent was higher than the world average of 2.04 percent and India’s 1.33 percent. There were 37 new COVID-19 hospital admissions—19 in Dimapur, 12 in Kohima and 6 in other districts.

Vaccination slumps again
There was a slump in vaccination as only 31,119 doses were administered during the week as opposed to 39,335 doses of the preceding week. Coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday celebrations in September, Nagaland had administered over 46 thousand doses a week for four weeks straight the same month.

The total vaccine coverage increased to 11,34,053 doses of which 4,33,441 were the second shot, or in other words, over 4.3 lakh people have been fully vaccinated. As per the IDSP, “Highest coverage districts are Dimapur, Kohima, Longleng and Mokokchung.”
