Nagaland: NVBDCP issues advisory on prevention of dengue

At least four cases reported in Dimapur

Dimapur, November 6 (MExN): At least four cases of dengue have surfaced in Dimapur in November—one each from Indisen, Signal Basti, 4th mile Diphupar A and Lhomithi colony. An advisory has also been issued by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) with regard to safe practices on prevention and control of the disease
“The programme has been conducting various activities like entomological studies, larvicidal operations, larvivorous fish distribution for open drains, water bodies, fogging, house to house fever survey, dengue awareness, etc., in order to contain further infection,”  Joint Director & State Programme Officer for NVBDCP Dr Neisakho Kere said in an advisory on Saturday. Underscoring that every household must actively participate in controlling the breeding of dengue mosquitoes in and around their surroundings, Dr Kere emphasised that combating dengue disease only through the endeavours of the programme alone is futile.

The advisory stated that the general public have a huge responsibility to play in containing the disease. Prime amongst which is to ensure that surroundings of homes, schools, settlements and businesses are clean and there are no stagnated water in drains, discarded containers, disposed vehicle tyres and other medium of storage, it said.

It also made a fervent  appeal to the community/public to observe ‘one dry day in a week’ where water in all the containers around the house like flower pot bases, empty vessels, coolers, tyres, buckets etc., are emptied out into a dry area because dengue mosquitoes breed in stagnant water.

“Keep all water filled vessels and tanks tightly covered and throw out any rubbish lying around like plastic cups, old containers, tyres, coconut shells etc., and to check around the compound every week,” it advised.

It also recommended the use of mosquito nets both during day and night time, especially for pregnant women and children, and to immediately consult a doctor in case of high fever.
