Nagaland rolls out school safety compliance course

KOHIMA, AUGUST 8 (MExN): In a bid to strengthen disaster preparedness in the education sector, the Government of Nagaland has rolled out a School Safety Policy Compliance Course in partnership with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the Department of School Education (DoSE), and NagaEd.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of data showing that 98 per cent of schools across India are unprepared to effectively respond to disasters. From earthquakes and landslides to fires and flash floods, schools remain highly vulnerable, often lacking basic emergency protocols, trained staff, or structural safeguards.

A press release from NagaED said that the new compliance course is aimed at closing this preparedness gap through a statewide, contextualised disaster management training programme for schools. The first phase of the rollout has seen over 7,500 teachers register for the training, with the state government calling for full statewide completion by October 31, 2025.

Unlike one-off workshops, the NSDMA School Safety Policy Compliance Course has been designed using modern instructional design principles and tailored to Nagaland’s unique geographic and socio-cultural conditions. Developed by NagaEd, the course seeks to translate the National School Safety Policy (NSSP 2016) into a practical, engaging and replicable training experience for school administrators and teachers.

“This is a contextual, scalable solution,” the press release noted, adding that the programme is being positioned as a model for other states, NGOs, and CSR stakeholders looking to implement sustainable school safety programmes.

The initiative marks the first time a state in the region has institutionalised a school safety compliance course at scale, setting what officials say is “a new benchmark” for disaster preparedness in the education sector.

The NSDMA serves as the apex body for disaster preparedness and response in Nagaland, while the DoSE oversees primary and secondary education initiatives. NagaEd, an instructional design studio, specialises in developing digital learning solutions for the development and government sectors.
