Kohima, October 8 (MExN):The Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) Day was observed today at the ongoing 12th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy at the Kohima Local Ground as NSACS being one of the partner in organizing the tournament as part of the NSACS Multi Media Campaign 2011.
Menukhol John, Commissioner and Secretary for Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland who was the chief patron, in his short address challenged the gathering to join hand together and fight against AIDS. Nukshinaro GIPA Coordinator, NSCAS speaking at the occasion said that, there are more 11,000 people living with HIV but because of stigma and discrimination, there are hardly 20 HIV positive people talk about their status. She also added that there is a stigma even in attending the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) for HIV testing. Motivational Speech was given by Thribhuvan. He said, “Do not criminalize alcohol and drug addiction. He encouraged them to avail re-habilitation”, while speaking in the context of ‘There is life beyond addiction’.
Besides the organizing committee and sports lovers, NSACS officials and various stakeholders in the field of HIV and AIDS like NUN, Kripa Foundation, NNP+ and Kekhrie Foundation with its mobile ICTC were present at the program. Source sais some officials of the organizers of Martyrs Memorial Trophy; Angami Students’ Union, went for HIV testing at Mobile ICTC stationed at the venue thereby setting an example of availing at the same time fighting the stigma attached to HIV testing.
