Nagaland: Vehicle registration up 35.13% in 2021; yet to reach pre-pandemic level

Vehicle registration in Nagaland saw a ‘healthy’ 35.13% growth in 2021 when compared to 2020, according to data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

However, the registration is yet to recover to pre-pandemic level, though it denotes a significant increase from 2020, when the number nearly halved, to -44.44%, when compared with 2019. 

Accordingly, the total number of vehicle registrations in Nagaland from January to December 2021 was 21,883, up from 16,194 in 2020, informed the data available on the VAHAN Dashboard.

VAHAN Dashboard is an online data repository of all vehicles registration and other related issues in the country developed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and maintained by the MoRTH. 

As reported earlier, due to the onset of COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns that halted economic activities, vehicle registration saw drastic fall in 2020 particularly from the start of 2nd quarter in April, which continued till July when there was just 10 registrations. 

It started to pickup gradually from August, but low registrations during the April-August period pull down the overall total to 16,194 in 2020, a sharp -44.44% decline from 29,146 in 2019.

While registration started on a positive note in the first quarter (January-March) of 2021, the onset of the second wave impacted the process, particularly in May and June when just 763 were registered.   

However, the registration gradually recovered in the third quarter (July-September) and the momentum continued to close the year at 21,883, up by 35.13%, over 2020. However, it is yet to reach the 2019 pre-COVID level. 

Apart from the pandemic, data on the VAHAN Dashboard indicated that vehicle registrations in Nagaland, in tune with national trend, saw a declining trend from 2019, when the number fell to 29,164 from 33,875 in 2018, indicating a 13.96 % decline.

As of January 9, the overall registration of vehicles in Nagaland stood at 3,73,795. Across India, registrations of vehicles increased by 2.61% to 1.68 crore in 2021, up from 1.63 crore in 2020. In 2020, there was -23.68 % fall in registrations.  (See table)

LMVs dominate, no sparks for electric vehicles 
Out of 21,883 registrations in 2021, a total of 20,872 vehicles are shown to be conforming to the latest Bharat Stage VI emission norms, denoting that most cars were new.   

In terms of fuel, almost all vehicles registered were either diesel or petrol based, at 9,553 and 12,213 respectively. The other fuel categories were hybrid- (99) and CNG (6), while 10 were given as 'not applicable'. 

Significantly, usage of the Electric BOV (Battery Operated Vehicles) is yet to catch on in Nagaland with just 2 registrations in 2021. Likewise, in 2019 and 2020, only 41 vehicles were registered under the Electric BOV category.  

Category-wise, most registrations were Light Motor Vehicle (7,588), followed by Heavy Goods Vehicle (6170) and Two Wheeler (Non-Transport) 5766.

The top 5 ‘Makers’ in 2021 were Tata Motors LTD (4,434), followed by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (4,041), Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (1,849), Ashok Leyland Ltd (1,699),  VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd (758) and Hyundai Motor India Ltd (642).

In two/three wheelers segment, the top 5 were Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) LTD  (1,497), Hero Motocorp Ltd (1,313), TVS Motor Company Ltd (1,193), India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd (768), Bajaj Auto Ltd (634) and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (327).

During the same period, in the relatively higher-end category, there were 42 registrations for Isuzu Motors India Pvt Ltd; 19 MG Motor India Pvt Ltd; 4 Mercedes –Benz (1 AG and 3 Pvt Ltd); and 3 Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd and 2 Jaguar Land Rover India Limited.

A total of 320 Royal-Enfield as well as 1 Kawasaki and Triumph bikes were also registered. 

Construction makers also saw healthy growth with JCB India Limited leading with 205 registrations, followed by Escorts Limited (Construction Equipment) -37; Ajax Fiori Engineering Pvt Ltd (36) and CASE New Holland Construction Equipment (I) Pvt Ltd (35). 

Others such as Wirtgen India Pvt LTD, Caterpillar India Private Limited, Action Construction Equipment Ltd, Liugong India Pvt Ltd, M/S Schwing Stetter (India) Private Limited, Volvo CE India Private Limited, and Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Co. Ltd, China saw double digit registration. 

In Nagaland, 1 State Transport Authority and 8 regional or district transports offices – Dimapur, Kohima Mokokchung, Mon, Phek, Tuensang, Wokha, and  Zunheboto are integrated with the VAHAN dashboard. 

As per the Dashboard, the overall registration of vehicles  is highest at Kohima RTO (153998), followed by Dimapur DTO (107,632) and Mokokchung RTO (51126).
