Nagaland has recorded its strongest first-half vehicle registration performance in at least five years, with 15,767 vehicles registered between January and June 2026, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ VAHAN Dashboard.
Another 426 vehicles were registered during the first five days of July, taking the year’s total to 16,012 as of July 4.
The six-month total surpassed the corresponding figures recorded over the previous four years available on the dashboard. Vehicle registrations stood at 15,748 during the same period in 2024, 13,826 in 2023, 13,723 in 2025 and 13,135 in 2022, indicating a strong start to 2026.
The latest figures also highlight an interesting shift in the composition of new registrations. Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) emerged as the single largest category with 5,988 registrations, accounting for more than one in every three vehicles registered this year. They were followed by 4,830 Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and 3,802 non-transport two-wheelers. The remaining registrations comprised 770 Light Goods Vehicles, 348 transport three-wheelers, 274 vehicles under other categories, besides smaller numbers of passenger and medium commercial vehicles.
The fuel profile reflects a similar trend. Diesel-powered vehicles led registrations by a comfortable margin with 8,014 vehicles, representing roughly half of all registrations so far this year. Petrol (E20)-compatible vehicles accounted for 5,300 registrations, followed by 2,078 conventional petrol vehicles. Hybrid variants collectively contributed 603 registrations.
Electric mobility, however, continues to make only a marginal presence in the state. As of July 5, only 18 pure electric vehicles (EVs) and 42 strong hybrid EVs had been registered, meaning electrified vehicles accounted for well below one per cent of all registrations recorded in 2026.
Among manufacturers, Tata Motors topped the registrations with 3,371 vehicles, followed by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (2,576), Ashok Leyland Ltd (1,765), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (1,431) and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (1,012). Other major contributors included VE Commercial Vehicles, TVS Motor Company, Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto and Yamaha, underscoring a broad spread across commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and two-wheelers.
The registrations also included a small but notable number of premium and luxury marques. During the period, the state recorded registrations of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, Skoda, Toyota, Kia and Honda Cars, indicating continued demand across the higher-end passenger vehicle segment, albeit in limited numbers.
The VAHAN Dashboard further shows that Dimapur (NL-01) continued to dominate transport activity in the state. The RTO accounted for 2,07,882 registered vehicles, significantly ahead of Kohima (NL-07) with 1,69,149, while the remaining leading RTOs were Mokokchung (NL-02) with 55,423, Mon (NL-08) with 19,289 and Tuensang (NL-03) with 19,148.
Dimapur also handled the highest number of transport transactions at 2.61 million and generated over Rs122.7 crore in revenue, far exceeding other RTOs. Meanwhile, NL-99 accounted for the overwhelming majority of permit transactions, issuing nearly 1.19 lakh permits, suggesting that permit administration remains concentrated in a separate office.
