Swachh Survekshan 2022: Nagaland’s Smart City and commercial capital in bottom-10

Cleanliness levels of Nagaland’s only smart city and State’s capital Kohima as well as its commercial capital Dimapur have deteriorated in the past year, highlighted the Swachh Survekshan 2022 which was released on October 2.

Both Dimapur and Kohima were ranked in the bottom 10 of the national ranking of 882 cities with population of 1-10 lakh, reflected the annual national cleanliness survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under Swacch Bharat Mission (U).

Notably, both cities also showed decline in overall scores in 2022, after showing a marked improvement last year. 
Of the two, Dimapur was ranked higher at 376 out of 382 cites, with an overall score of 1112.87 points out of possible 7500 points. 

The ranking of Dimapur in 2022 is a considerable slip from 322 last year out of 372 cities with a score of 1530 points. 

While Kohima was slotted under cities with 50,000-1 lakh population in 2021, it was ranked in the 1-10 lakh population category in 2022. 

Nevertheless, its scoring declined from 1321.04 in 2021 to 1098.08 in 2022, and was listed fifth from the bottom (378 out of 382 cities).

The national average score in the 1-10 lakh category was 2618.00 points in 2022. 

Kurnool, Rewa, Tirupati respectively occupied the top-3 position in the category while Itanagar, Jhunjhunun and Anantnag respectively were first, second and third from the bottom.

Pluses & Minuses
As per ‘Status of the city’ provided in the Swachh Survekshan 2022 Dashboard,  Dimapur’s status of  ‘Cleanliness of water bodies’ were given as ‘very good’ while ‘City beautification,’ Cleanliness of roads and drains were given as above 50%. 

However, it flattered in citizen grievance redressal, daily sweeping in residential areas, cleanliness of public toilets, and segregated door to door waste collection with less than 25%. 

Cleanliness of residential area and market areas were also shown to be below 50%. 

Likewise in Kohima, the red flagged concerns were segregated door to door waste collection, cleanliness of public toilets, daily sweeping in residential areas.

Citizen grievance redressal was also a concern, while cleanliness of market areas, residential area, drains, and water bodies as well as non-availability of open garbage dumps were shown to be highly satisfactory (90% above). 
City beautification and cleanliness of roads were also pluses in the case of Kohima. 

Dimapur and Kohima both performed poorly in ‘Service Level Progress’ with maximum marks of 3000 and certifications for Garbage Free City and Open Defecation Free with possible points of 2250 points.

Both cities scored highest in ‘Citizen Voice’ with 622.38 for Kohima and 512.95 for Dimapur out of 2250 points.
