Nat’l webinar on sustainable chemistry and its impact on society held

Kohima, August 30(MExN): The Department of Chemistry, St Joseph’s College (A), Jakhama organized a national webinar on the theme ‘sustainable chemistry and its impact on society’ on August 27 and 28 with by scholars, academicians and students in attendance.

The two-day event which also included an offline mode, was held with a view to study and acknowledge various impacts of chemistry on the society, and how it can help in preventing chemical hazards like plastic waste, industrial wastes, chemical wastes etc. or improving the needs of the society through recycling of wastes, proper degradation of chemicals, reduction of plastic usage etc., the department informed in a press release on August 28.

The technical sessions were conducted by four resource persons. The first day’s session was chaired by Senchumbeni Yanthan (Asst Professor,Dept. of Chemistry SJC(A) Jakhama). The session started with a welcome address from Rev Fr Dr George Keduolhou Angami, Principal of the College.

The resource person of the first technical session was Dr Geetmani Singh Nongthombam (PDF, IIT Guwahati) who presented on the topic ‘Insights into the Chemistry of Steroids’. He cleared the misconceptions of its consumptions and how they function. He also spoke on its productions and side effects. The second technical session featured resource person Dr Latonglila Jamir (Asst Professor, Dept. of Environmental sciences, Nagaland University), who spoke on ‘Sustainable Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals: Impact on society and Environment’. The resource person spoke on the drug industries and its synthesis and also presented the scope on its research.

Madovi David (Asst Professor, SJC(A), Jakhama) chaired the first session of the second day. The resource person of the session was Dr Ramen Jamatia (Asst Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh) spoke on ‘Nanomaterials in Organic Synthesis’ and shared on how nano materials is impacting the society and how it is reshaping various fields like agriculture, medicines etc. The second session was chaired by Gaijuliu (Asst Professor, SJC (A), Jakhama) and resource person Dr M Arockia Doss (Head of department of chemistry, St Joseph’s University, Dimapur) spoke on ‘Design for Degradation’. The speaker highlighted the impact of plastics on the natural world. He also spoke on its prevention and degradation.

Vote of thanks was delivered by Rev Fr Peter Solo, Dean of Science, SJC (A), Jakhama. The webinar ended with concluding remarks by the chairperson.
