Nagaland’s Higher & Technical Education Minister Temjen Imna Along today introduced North East Christian University (First Amendment) Bill, 2020 on the floor of the House.

NLA speaker Sharingain Longkumer informed that the consideration and passing of the Bill will be taken up on February 10. On statement of object and reasons, the Minister stated that the object of the Bill is to delete the third paragraph of the Act - “And whereas, the University shall be affiliatory in nature open to any private institutions and colleges.”

As per the UGC Regulation 2003 on the “establishment of and maintenance of standard in private universities” under section 3.2 states that “A private university shall be unitary university” which does not allow a private university to open to other institutions for affiliation.

The Minister stated that the implementation of the NECU (First amendment) Bill 2020 does not involve any recurring or non recurring expenditure from the consolidated fund of the state of Nagaland.
