The New Year started on a tragic note for a group of picnickers in Dimapur. One person was killed and 7 others were injured after picnickers on a pickup truck (NL 07 A 4902) returning from a New Year picnic met with an accident at Chümoukedima on January 1. According to the Traffic Control (Zone II), the accident occurred around 8:30 pm at NH 29 at a spot between the NAPTC and the Patkai Bridge. The police said that the pickup overturned. The driver was said to have survived but absconded right after the mishap. The deceased victim was a 45 year-old woman identified as Depali Baswali, a resident of Burma Camp, who the police said was found dead on the spot. The injured were admitted to the CIHSR where some were released after first aid. The deceased woman’s husband was also among the injured, the police added. No road mishap was reported from within the jurisdiction of Traffic Control (Zone II) on the intervening night of December 31-January 1. Meanwhile, Traffic Control (Zone I) informed that no major accident was reported from its jurisdiction during the same period.
