DIMAPUR, JANUARY 24 (MExN): The National Foundation for India (NFI) organized a seminar on the 'SDG Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institution' on the January 24 with the youths at the office of ARK Foundation, Kohima.
The objective of the seminar was to create awareness to the youths on how to promote peace and generate an inclusive society for sustainable development.
Highlighting the background of the program, Vekulu Demo, District Field Coordinator, NFI, gave an overview of the project initiated by NFI towards SDG Goal 16 since July 2021 in Nagaland, while the program in the district of Kohima was hosted by the ARK foundation. She stated that the program aimed to empower the youths on the importance of peace, Justice and Strong Institution, and how to resolve conflicts among various and numerous social groups.
Speaking at the seminar, the resource person, Dr Viketoulie Pienyü, State Medical Officer, State Mental Health Institute, presented on the social problems leading to injustice and violence in the country. Underlining some of the key social problems, he lamented about the crimes committed against children and women, corruption, injustice, inequality, unemployment, climatic change etc. All such social elements results in serious repercussions in the larger society.
In his deliberations, he also emphasized on the need to transfer investment from the upper section of the society to the less privileged section of the society. According to him, this can create a balance in the various classes prevailing within the society. One of his core concepts to promote peace and justice was to create employment opportunities to the less fortunate. This will result them in sustaining their source of income, access to education/health care, and overall well being.
The resource person suggested that the Government should enact a law to stop abuse, exploitation, corruption, etc. He also advised the youths to be vigilant and be alert to develop strong accountability system.
Lastly, he challenged the youths of today to take up issues which will lead to a sustainable life in the future and to bring a significant change, one should be responsible to bring peace, justice and equality to play a role in the society.
