NLA Committee notes progress at Wazeho Mini Cement Plant

Committee on Public Undertakings members inspect the Mini Cement Plant at Wazeho during their study tour on September 17–18.

Kohima, September 22 (MExN): The Committee on Public Undertakings (COPU) of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, under the chairmanship of Dr. Sukhato A Sema, undertook a study tour to assess and verify the status of the Mini Cement Plant (MCP) at Wazeho on September 17 and 18.

According to a press release from the Assembly Secretariat, the chairman was accompanied by committee member Dr. Neisatuo Mero and special invitee Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, MLA of 20-Meluri A/C and Advisor for New and Renewable Energy, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, along with officials from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat.

The Committee physically inspected two projects—the 150 TPD Mini Cement Plant and the Decorative & Dimensional Stone Plant (DDSP) at Wazeho. During the inspection, officials of the Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (NSMDCL) informed the Committee that the Mini Cement Plant at Wazeho had been leased out to M/S Ramung Enterprises for a period of 30 years. The Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties was signed on November 11, 2024.

Although repair and renovation of the old machinery and equipment had been carried out, the Committee was informed that trial production of cement would not be able to start in October due to weather conditions. The Committee was also told that the lime found in the area is “the finest in the whole region of North-East” which can produce 43-grade quality cement. A demonstration of the cement plant manufacturing process was put into operation and shown to the Committee.

The Committee expressed satisfaction with the functional operation of the Decorative & Dimensional Stone Plant, where interlocking bricks and hollow block bricks are being manufactured.
The Committee also held detailed discussions on the proposed development of inland waterways, which, it noted, could help market cement products to neighboring countries such as Myanmar and other Southeast Asian nations in the future.

During the visit, the Committee highlighted the need for setting up an administrative office in Wazeho, stating that it is vital as it provides structure, organization, and efficiency for business operations. It observed that an administrative office would allow companies to achieve their goals by managing daily tasks, facilitating communication, optimizing resources, maintaining a professional image, ensuring compliance, and creating opportunities for local employment and business development.

Overall, the Committee said it was satisfied with the practical arrangements in place for the trial production of 43-grade cement by M/S Ramung Enterprises and the operation of the Decorative & Dimensional Stone Plant. It conveyed its appreciation to Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, Secretary In-Charge, NLA, DGP, DC Kohima, IGP & SP Kohima, DC Phek, ADC Pfutsero, DC Meluri, and to the Department of Geology & Mining and the NSMDCL for the logistical support extended during the visit.

The Committee further thanked the Chief Minister for supporting the revival of the Mini Cement Plant for revenue generation for the State and also conveyed its appreciation to the Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly for allowing the Committee to undertake the study.
