NLSF urges state govt to set up a separate High Court in Nagaland

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) has urged the state government to set up a separate High Court for Nagaland at the earliest.

This was conveyed to the Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate, Justice and Law during a joint meeting held at the former’s office in Kohima on November 20.

The Federation considered it as a matter of great concern that despite the passage of more than 55 years since attaining statehood, Nagaland is yet to have a High Court of its own. It argued that “Nagaland cannot be defined nor termed as a full pledged state since it doesn’t have a separate High Court of its own.”

The Federation asserted that only with the establishment of a separate High Court, the aspirations of the people of Nagaland including the legal fraternity would be met as it would not only serve the interest of the people in particular but would be a great sign of progress for the government of the day in fulfilling the dreams of the legal fraternity in the state.

The Federation also pointed out that it does not reflect well for Nagaland when other states formed and established later on have surpassed the state in the establishment of High Court.

It therefore appealed the state government to give priority for possible establishment of a separate High Court.
The Federation, in a separate representation, also appealed for establishment of a Directorate of Prosecution in the state.
