Dimapur, September 17 (MExN): The Naga Hoho has said implementing the 33% reservation for women in decision-making institutions is “premature”, but strangely, has advocated “empowerment by creating various opportunity and implement in letter and spirit.”
In the rationale of the Naga Hoho, the “pros and cons” for introducing 33% Women Reservation is “pre-mature” rather “women empowerment” must be advocated first. The Naga Hoho issued a note today explaining the stance as decided during the organization’s federal assembly in Kohima on August 24.
The “bone of contention,” according to the Naga Hoho, among the various organizations and individuals over the 33% Women Reservation “has become a matter of great concern which needs to be addressed collectively with all sincerity.” Naga Hoho president Keviletuo Kiewhuo and general secretary P Chuba Ozukum appended the note.
During the recent Naga Hoho’s ‘intensive tour’ of Nagaland, the note said, the subject matter has been discussed thoroughly with all the constituent units/ tribes to “ascertain the position and opinion of the Naga Hoho towards women reservation policy.”
Subsequently, the ‘hoho’ stated, the “pros and cons” of the 33% Women Reservation was deliberated again during its 4th Federal Assembly of the Naga Hoho. “(The assembly) unanimously resolved that “the Naga Hoho has observed that it is still pre-mature to introduce 33% women reservation in the Naga society and therefore decided to advocate rather towards women ‘empowerment’ by creating various opportunity and implement in letter and spirit.”
The Naga Hoho appeals to “all womenfolk” to “understand the complexity” and uniqueness of Naga “customary laws and usages” and stand in the “best interest of both Naga men and women.”
