Nobody wants democracy

ET Ezung
Senior Congress Leader

The elected and the electorate have never been more apart than in the past six months. If anything, the recent political mess in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly highlights the lack of standard governance in the State. In these times, Naga people are asking where are the good roads, bridges, electricity, good hospitals, and schools. For the infighting of the legislators is like a malady upon the people and as a sick person promises to live well during recovery, so too, the electorate are reminded of their power to elect well during elections.

In a way, this hurried government leads the way to easy questioning of ethics in governance and the role of Governments as institutions for public welfare of its citizens are made apparent. The irony is that the more the newspapers print the political tussle, the more public recall what should be the ideal duties of their elected officials. The play for personal power however imperative for our honourable legislators was unnecessary for the common man. It is the need of the hour for compassionate Naga leaders regardless of tribe or political party.
