Nagaland’ Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said that the nomination of members to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would be a ‘stop gap arrangement’ till the committee come out with its recommendations on how to conduct the polls.
Talking to media persons in Kohima today, he said that during the recent meeting with the apex civil societies, it decided to set up a committee headed by Chief Secretary and the member secretary would be a Principal Secretary of the Urban Development department. While the Committee is at work, the nomination formula would be applied, “since we have an elected government, the municipality should not be run by an administrator,” he said, adding, “That’s only stop gap arrangement.”
The CM was of the view that it was time to the matter of ULBs in the state, and informed that the nominees will come from Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO), Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) and Tenyimi Public Organization (TPO), and also women representatives—one from civil society and another from government side.
He also addressed the objections raised by certain organisations on the nomination formula saying that it was a democracy where anyone can voice their objections. “Anybody can voice (objections). Give us reasons why it should not be,” he added.
