NPCB sensitizes on management and handling of wastes

Collection centres and scrap dealers required to register with Nagaland Pollution Control Board

Dimapur, February 28 (MExN): The Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) conducted an ‘interactive and awareness programme on management and handling of wastes’ at Conference Hall, NPCB, Signal Point, Dimapur to sensitize the people involved in dealing with various wastes of the rules and how best wastes can be handled with least harm to the environment. 

The Board stated in a press release that the programme held on February 28 was attended by municipal councils, town councils and collection centres/scrap dealers.

Rusovil John, Member Secretary, NPCB, highlighted that the need for conducting programme was to create cleaner, better and healthier environment.

Some important waste management rules were discussed and power point presentation on solid waste management was presented by Khriehunuo Rutsa, IT Officer, wherein she highlighted the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, source of Solid waste and effects of poor solid waste management and duties and responsibilities of local authorities and village councils.

Sentinaro, Scientific Assistant in her presentation on plastic waste management stressed on the harmful effects of plastic waste and encouraged alternate use of plastics. 

Presentation on e-waste management was given by Olivi Chophy, Scientific Assistant, where she highlighted E-Waste Management Rules, 2016 and handling of E-wastes to the scrap dealers and collection centres and harmful effects of E-Waste. 

Grievances and problems faced by various Municipals and Town Councils were also discussed during the programme. Vote of Thanks was delivered by Akangmeren Imchen, Scientist B, NPCB.

Collection centres and scrap dealers are required to be registered with the NPCB and in this regard, Member Secretary explained that entrepreneurs should maintain their collection centres in an appropriate manner and send the different types of wastes such as scrap metals, plastics, batteries, bottles/glass, paper, cartons and E-Waste to the registered recyclers or refurbishers authorized by the Central Pollution Control Board. And at the end of the year, the entrepreneur i.e. collection centres are to submit the Form 2(a) to the NPCB indicating the quantity of different types of wastes collected and send to recyclers so that the State will have proper data of wastes that are collected and recycled.

The Municipal Councils were also requested to register the collection centres and inform the NPCB of the details of the collection centres/scrap dealers in their respective districts.
