Dimapur, August 14 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Sunday condemned what it alleged as the attempt to 'smother the fundamental rights of Christians, Muslims and other minorities' in India.
In a press release on Sunday, NPCC President, K Therie alleged that in February 2022, a resolution was “passed in the Dharam Sansad held at Prayagraj to make India a 'Hindu Rashtra' and the idea of a constitution for the same was floated.”
“The first draft of the constitution of the Hindu nation or ‘Hindu Rashtra’ states that Varanasi will replace New Delhi as the country's capital,” it said.
“Besides, there is a proposal to build a 'Parliament of Religions' in Kashi (Varanasi). It also proposes that Muslims and Christians will enjoy all the rights of a common citizen, barring the right to vote,” it alleged.
As per the release, the ‘draft constitution’ further stipulated that “every citizen would be given compulsory military training and agriculture would be made completely tax free.”
“We strongly condemn the selfish draft attempting to smother the fundamental rights of Christians, Muslims and other minorities,” the NPCC stated in the release.
The serious endeavor to establish a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ with the contribution of seers and scholars has once again underlined the groundwork being executed to establish a Hindu nation with little or no regard the minorities, it said.
How can they propose to strip citizens of their voting rights because they are minorities? Such feudal ideas have no place in the progressing world arena, it added.
Stating that Nagaland “cannot be a part of such a constitution,” the NPCC President further called upon the secular-minded MLAs and MPs to “wake up and defend secularism by withdrawing their support and denouncing the draconian draft.”
