NSCW urged to create platform for women to be active participants in Naga political issue

Kohima, October 23 (MExN): The Chairmen Union, Jalukie President, Hauneu Haika on Friday appealed the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) “to create a platform for the women leaders and women in general to be active participants in the ongoing Naga political issue.”

Speaking in ‘The Way Forward’ session during the one-day legal awareness programme at Jalukie Town, Peren on October 22, Haika observed, “many Naga men-folk are divided over tribal lines, political lines and for vested interests and in such a crucial stage where Naga political issues are being tabled and discussed, the voice of the women should also be heard.”

He also said that in this changing world, the women are leading the nation and appealed that women should be given equal platform in every sphere. He expressed that every woman has the capability and potential to perform in bigger platforms, stated a press note from the NSCW.

The legal awareness programme was organized by NSCW supported by the National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Jalukie Town Women Welfare Organization.

Delivering the keynote address, NSCW, Chairperson, Khrienuo Tachu said, “Nagaland is a patriarchal society where men as protectors can play an important role against various discrimination faced by the Naga women and girl child in the society. Good patriarchy ensures a safe society resulting in less discrimination, thereby, safeguarding our Naga women and girl child.”

The NSCW Chairperson asserted that the Commission was committed to the empowerment of women and girls. “We need to nurture the girl child and give quality education because once they are well educated they will be able to survive wherever they are, stay strong and knowing their rights,” she said in her keynote address

She encouraged the participants to develop entrepreneurial skills, to protect themselves from cyber crime and most importantly be educated to become self-productive and self-reliant, upholding the value of dignity of labour. “Create a safe haven for women,” Tachu appealed while requesting the gathering to render equal treatment to both the boy and girl child, which she said, should start from every home.

Italang Ramlia, Panel Lawyer under Peren District Legal Services Authority facilitated the session on ‘Legal Rights.’ He highlighted the various legal rights for women guaranteed by the Indian Constitution such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act 2013, Law of Maintenance of Women in India, and Rights available to an arrested person/women in India, etc.

Asuni, Centre Administrator, Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) Peren facilitated the session on ‘Forms of Gender Based Violence; & Services of One Stop Centre’ where she gave a brief introduction on the functioning of the OSC, the various services available and how to avail them. The main objective of OSC is to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence both in public and private spaces under one roof and also to facilitate immediate, emergency and non-emergency access services including medical, legal, psychological and counselling etc., Asuni added.

She also highlighted on the Women Helpline 181, their importance and assistance provided to aggrieved women.

The programme was chaired by Bodeno S Colo, NSCW Secretary and Joint Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, while vote of thanks was proposed by Adai Iheilung, Former President, Jalukie Town Women Welfare Organization.

Later, the Women Commission team visited the Community Health Centre, Jalukie and interacted with the doctors and nurses. They also met a patient and extended token to her. The NSCW paid a visit to the Women Police Station at Jalukie and interacted with the officials.

The Commission made an inspection of the ongoing construction of the Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) located in the new DC complex, Peren along with the Centre Administrator of OSC and the District Administration, where the various challenges of the OSC were discussed.
