Zunheboto | June 22 : As part of its goodwill tour to various district headquarters in the state, the NSF met the Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu, Sumi Totimi Hoho, principals, teachers and other public leaders at Youth Hall Zunheboto on Wednesday. “We have come here to know the minds and take suggestions of the people so that we can go back and articulate on the points that we have gathered during the tour and take steps accordingly,” said NSF president, Kelhouneizo Yhome.
The first agenda deliberated was on education reforms where the participants put forward diverse views and mostly talked on the RTE Act 2009. Mentioning a provision in the RTE which stated that a teacher needs to be well trained to teach the students, SKK president, Nihoyi Kinnimi pointed out the difficulty in getting a teacher trained when there is no teachers’ training institute. “There is no teachers’ training institute in Zunheboto, so from where will we get our teachers trained,” he queried. The SKK president urged the NSF to pressurize the state government to first set up an institute in Zunheboto before going ahead with the RTE Act. On the issue of bogus appointment of teachers, the SKK assured its full cooperation and support to the NSF. Another SKK member, Hekuto stressed on the transparency in the various sections of the Act and in implementing it.
Stating that much importance is given to the low performing students under the RTE Act, a teacher pointed out the impending threat of leaving out the rest of the students in the process. Principal of Step by Step School Zunheboto, Zhekugha underscored the importance of quality education stating that the lack of it is the root cause of the un-employability factor. He stressed the need for introducing vocational courses in educational institutions. Looking at the number of students, he said Zunheboto district needs a Distrct Insitute of Education and Training (DIET) centre. He said that the teachers require special training to teach students with special needs.
Zunheboto Government College Principal Dr. Chubatola Aier suggested introduction of vocational courses which according to her could be a small but tangible step towards education reforms.
Another principal, Bhabe felt that the government needs to give an early decision on whether or not to hold the elementary board examination for Class VIII as it is confusing the students and teachers alike. The speakers also deliberated on the advantages and disadvantages of RTE Act. Some speakers felt that Zunheboto district might not be ready to effectively implement the Act. Some said that the frequent change in school syllabus is also proving detrimental to delivering quality education.
Taking note of the points delivered by the participants, NSF president said that the Federation would pressurize the government so see that the RTE Act is modified in an applicable manner and then implemented. He asserted that the Federation will not compromise its stand in fighting for the rights of the students.
On the job reservation issue, SKK president assured full cooperation and support of the Union to the NSF in demanding total review of the policy. He said the cabinet decision to hold special recruitment drive for 10 tribes granting them 1 EAC post each is further dividing the Nagas. The SKK president demanded that the cabinet decision be immediately revoked.
On the Naga issue, the Principal of Step by Step School said every Naga should see that their historical rights is not be wiped out.
Clarifying on why the NSF is touching upon the Naga political issue, the Federation president reminded about their Preamble which enshrined that the NSF will work and safeguard the interest of the Nagas. “It is equally important for the Federation to take up such issues,” he said.
On Thursday, the NSF team will be meeting with the people in Phek and Meluri.
