Dimapur, August 2 (MExN): The Nagaland University Teachers’ Association are relieved that vice chancellor Professor K “Kannan the destroyer” would be winding up his tenure in the institution. “We hope and pray that no university of India gets a tyrant with massive attitude problems for a vice chancellor, ever again,” stated the NUTA in an article received here today.
The last days of Kannan in the Nagaland University was indeed a very trying period for the “tyrant that he was”, according to the teachers. “He ran away from the Lumami campus (like the way he ran away from the Kohima campus) early in the wee hours of 15th June to avoid confrontation with various agitating groups at headquarters. He returned to headquarters during the visit of the Search Committee in an attempt to get his name empanelled for a second tenure.”
However, the NUTA said even his powerful friends are now not able to help him get a second tenure. “Interestingly, one of the Search Committee members remarked, during their visit to Lumami headquarters, that for a central university with so much of funds, the development of this university was indeed pathetically retarded. The only person to be blamed is Kannan, The Great Dictator, an egoist with huge complexes who ran this university, Burmese Junta style,” the university’s teachers stated.
Professor Kannan successfully manipulated some of the state politicians and bureaucrats by promising “a Medical College, Veterinary College, Institute of Fashion Technology, etc,” the NUTA said, while he promised some civil society members “a Nagaland University campus in the eastern part of Nagaland,” namely, Mon district. “He bluffed the Nagas and in the process siphoned off precious funds to the tune of crores of rupees, which he vehemently denies, as is usual with all looters,” the NUTA stated.
Even though funds are allotted by the ministry, the teachers said, he refused to develop the university, particularly the Kohima and Medziphema (SASRD) campuses. Accusing him of causing the near collapse of the campuses, particularly Kohima, the teachers said it was his “revenge on those who dared to question his dishonesty and total lack of integrity.”
The NUTA also referred to the university’s running 2 examination centers, illegally, till a few days back. One was in Dimapur and the other at Lumami, which were functioning without the approval of the university’s academic and executive councils under whose directives the VC is to work. “But does anybody care? He is leaving this university in total disarray. Yet there are people who would love to give him a proper farewell and all,” the teachers scoffed.
“During his short and tumultuous stay in Nagaland he has played extensive communal politics, pitting one tribe against the other within the University system and Naga Society at large. Such detrimental politics has caused mistrust amongst many people. So much for his love for the people of Nagaland…” the NUTA article stated.
Another charge that the NUTA leveled against Prof. K Kannan was one where the Ministry of Human Resource Development approved constituent colleges for Nagaland University comprising Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, and Gandhi Ashram at Chuchuyimlang. The NUTA said Kannan refused to table the matter during the Academic Council meeting held in July 2009 stating that “as we are unable to handle our own problems, why should we bring in additional burden on ourselves”?
“He even played with the ANCSU executive members by telling them that they can present the matter to the Academic Council. This invitation of civil societies to academic body meetings is clear violation of rules. For information of the members of these institutions and their governing bodies, the matter would have been taken care of by the members had he tabled the item as agenda. However, the tyrant that he is and who is used to running shows by himself, he refused…” NUTA stated in its statement.
