NVBDCP issues alert on increased mosquito density in Dimapur

Dimapur, August 14 (MExN): The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) has informed that the vector density which refers to the number of mosquito population is increasing over the months.

The finding was made during a routine Entomological study by the NVBDCP on Malaria, Dengue and Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vector density in various localities in Dimapur, Dr I Talitemsula Jamir, Joint Director and SPO of  NVBDCP informed in a press release on Friday.

Reiterating that mosquitoes thrive in areas with standing water so the current monsoon rains are adding to the growing population, the NVBDCP appealed to the community/public all over the state to remove stagnant water from all the containers around the house like flower pot bases, empty vessels, coolers, tyres, buckets etc. once a week because mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and the eggs will hatch in a week.

Keep all water filled vessels and tanks tightly covered and throw out any rubbish lying around like plastic cups, old containers, tyres, coconut shells etc. and to check around the compound every week, the release added.

It also discouraged the rearing of pigs near human dwellings “as the JE virus gets multiplied and amplified in the pigs which can be transmitted to humans.”

The NVBDCP also urged the public to ensure that that all sleep under the mosquito net during day and night time, especially pregnant women and children, and to immediately consult a doctor in case of high fever.
