One sentenced to 3 years for stealing arms

KIPHIRE, AUGUST 19 (MExN): The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kiphire has sentenced one person to 3 years simple imprisonment after convicting him under sections 379 and 380 of the IPC. The judgment relates to a 2009 case wherein the accused, Aseba Sangtam, a personnel of DEF Kiphre stole 2 AK-47 rifles with 120 rounds of ammunition, 6 magazines, and one 9mm Carbine with 60 rounds and 2 magazines and absconded while serving in Nagaland Police as a body guard to the then Kiphire Sr SP on April 19, 2009. The accused then joined the NNC FGN (NA). A copy of the sentence hearing, made available to the media by the Kiphire Public Prosecutor, said that “releasing the accused under provisions of Probation of Offenders Act will portray a very lenient approach of the court and thereby encourage other potential offenders to commit similar offences.” The Court convicted the accused and sentenced him to undergo 1 year simple imprisonment under Section 379 of the IPC and 3 years simple imprisonment under Section 380 of the IPC. The sentence shall undergo concurrently, the order stated.
