Chümoukedima, February 23 (MExN): The Department of Geology, Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Chümoukedima, conducted a one-day disaster management training and mock rehearsal at the college's Administrative Block on February 23.

The training was led by Deputy Commandant Ahanthem Boboi and his team, who demonstrated a wide range of practical techniques and response strategies to be followed during emergencies, particularly earthquakes.

Participants were taught step-by-step procedures for evacuating injured individuals safely, using both manual techniques and improvised tools. The training emphasised the importance of quick thinking, teamwork, and maintaining calm during emergencies.

A key highlight of the program was the hands-on demonstration of life-saving skills such as Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Students actively participated in the session, learning how to perform CPR correctly and assist injured victims during critical situations.

The team also showcased simple yet effective methods to rescue individuals from drowning using everyday objects such as plastic bottles, cans, life vests, and containers, demonstrating that even basic resources can be used to save lives. Advanced rescue techniques, including the safe evacuation and transportation of injured victims from elevated structures using rescue ziplines were also demonstrated.

Additionally, the team conducted a fire safety demonstration, explaining how to control fires caused by gas leaks by cutting off the oxygen supply using simple tools such as a bucket or cloth. Students were also given the opportunity to practice these techniques under supervision, enhancing their confidence and preparedness.

The primary objective of the training programme was to raise awareness among students and faculty about disaster preparedness and response. It aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and readiness to act during emergencies, thereby contributing to safer communities.

Amongla Ao, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Geology, in her vote of thanks expressed gratitude to the DDMA Chümoukedima and the NDRF Kohima team for imparting valuable lessons and lauded the team for their commitment to spread awareness on disaster management.
