Dimapur | December 4 : 2000 years ago, a tiny, sweetly and cuddly dozing baby was treated to a special birthday performance from musicians not of this world. 2000 years later, billions from across the ages, race and walk continue to reflect and worship as did the joyous angels who sang for the baby Jesus.
A moody Sunday afternoon isn’t so much a deterrent when push comes to a note – especially with an institution like Patkai Christian College for an occasion as joyous as Christmas. Known for churning out both leaders and musicians in one strict cough, the reputed college merrily declared the Noel today by throwing open Bundrock Chapel for the institution’s annual Christmas concert, the 30th.
Parents and patrons and students and visibly proud Patkai alumni packed the chapel to be washed in joyously rousing musical performances from Patkai’s student musicians. Led as usual from the front by the inimitable Margaret Shishak, Director of Music, the ensembles and the odd soloist, chorale regents and instrumentalists led the packed auditorium into traversing exultations and gratitude, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
A highlight of the event was the performances of the string troupes especially the young violin ensemble and of course the school choirs. However, these eager and talented young performers had to crane their young necks harder just so they manage to stay out from the shadows of their greater-experienced senior violinists.
Also, notwithstanding an infuriating static or two from the music system, the guitar ensembles and the Patkai Chorale performed as would any professional – keep playing nonchalantly with a momentous grin even when the ship had just elbowed a nice little iceberg.  The guitar ensemble played traditions such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Muzio Clementi.
Another notable performance of the Patkai Chorale, led by Music Lecturer Temjenyala Longchari, was a dramatized medley comprising some of the better know Christmas exultations such as the traditional ‘Go, Tell it on the Mountain’, ‘Wake, Shepherds, Awake’ and the goose-pump friendly ‘The Christ Child Carol’ (Eugene Butler) and the deep, throbbing and regal commemoration of ‘Echo Noel’ (Gordon Young).’
Concluding the concert was Margaret Shishak on the Organ for Symphony No. 5 in F Minor (1879) written by Charles Marie Widor. The exuberance and unbridled joy of about six minutes that made the score Widor’s best-known composition, was definitely a fitting touch to the concert.
The chorales were conducted by music teachers Temjenyala Longchari and Kevisekuo Sechu while the violin troupe was led by Louise Shishak, the guitar ensemble by Limasanen Imsong. On the Piano was Zingrin A Shishak, a lecturer in the Music department of the college.
