The possibility of debate on election manifesto between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) is unlikely to take place, with the latter putting a spanner to the proposal citing busy schedule.

The Clean Election Movement (CEM) Nagaland Baptist Church Council, on February 20, had offered to host such an event  on February 23, after both parties earlier indicated that they were ready for a ‘verbal duel.’

Responding to the proposal during a public rally in Diphupar village on February 21, the NPCC President K Therie announced that he would participate in the debate.

“I will be participating there. I will see that we present our case before the BJP. We will not let you down. We will voice our people’s aspirations and we believe the welfare of the people is the final law,” he asserted.

When contacted for comment on the CEM's proposal, the Convenor of BJP Nagaland Media Cell, Sapralu Nyekha informed The Morung Express via text that the party has written to the CEM about its inability to participate in the debate. She had originally proposed the debate earlier on February 16.

“…We have our National President arriving in the State for Rally on 23rd and 24th (February) is our Hon'ble Prime Minister for the grand finale. Many programs line up and we are running short of time. (sic),” she elaborated.
