2012 can aptly be called the “Year of Darkness” in Nagaland. Half the state’s power supply collapsed with Dimapur district being the worst hit. But unlike Dimapur where citizens brought their anger out on the streets, in several paces the problems went unreported. There was report of power blackout for nearly six months in some areas under Zunheboto district.

As the public suffered, the Power department expressed helplessness and put the blame on outdated infrastructure, power theft and non-payment of bills. It took public outrage, street protests and even vandalizing of a sub-station office to draw the attention of the Minister for Power on the plight of the public. In spite of the assurances given by the Minister and the department, the power scenario in the State continues to look grim.

But if figures are to go by, the Power sector in Nagaland could see some improvement in months to come. It is learnt that a number of small and mega projects are in the pipeline. Sources have informed that the total estimated provision for the department for the year 2012-13 for various schemes and projects is more than Rs.9000 lakhs.

Under the State’s earmarked programme, Rs.200 lakhs has been sanctioned for the purchase of power transformer for the whole State. It is also learnt that the department has been granted “Negotiated Loan” for upgrading distribution transformers for the whole State.

Dimapur is also in for some good news.  A 33/11 KV, 10 MVA sub-station at Super Market with an estimated cost of Rs.1200 lakhs is in the pipeline. Further, a 66/11 KV 20 MVA substation at Cricket Stadium, Sovima, has been commissioned. There is also provision for another micro-hydel scheme for Dimapur district, it is learnt.

In addition, smaller KV sub-stations in Tuensang and Mon districts, including restoration and upgrading of substations in the districts of Mokokchung, Zunheboto and Kohima are in the pipeline.

A special package provision has also been made for underdeveloped areas of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng and Kiphire. The department has also earmarked funds for communitisation of Power for the whole state. Some of the projects are already underway while some would be taken up in the current financial year.

With power demand increasing every day, it is pertinent that the department take all measures to ensure that the funds are utilised judiciously and projects completed on time. This could go a long way in improving the dismal power scenario in Nagaland.
