Protest momentarily blocks traffic at Newfield check post

Dimapur | March 1

Vehicular traffic at the Newfield inter-state check post, Dimapur was blocked off by protestors on the Assam side of the border for about an hour on March 1. The protest which began at around 2:30pm blocked vehicles from plying across the check-post.

According to Dimapur Police, the protest was caused due to a misunderstanding. An event held in the vicinity on the Nagaland side of the border had prompted enhanced security arrangements along the check-post. Such security enhancements are done when large events are held, it was added.

As per the Dimapur Police, this security enhancement was misconstrued by residents on the Assam side as an ILP drive, thereby causing the protest.

Khatkati Police however stated that the protest was held as their Nagaland counterparts had detained nine persons for non-possession of Inner Line Permits (ILPs) at the check post. The detained persons were subsequently released, it was added.

As of Sunday evening, there was heavy deployment of police personnel on both sides of the border, but normal movement of vehicles had resumed.
