The Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Nagaland (ZSUN) and Kuki Students’ Union Organization, Nagaland (KSON) along with other Civil Society Organizations held a public rally at Peren Town on June 23 against the ‘indifferent attitude’ of the state government towards its ultimatum submitted on June 10.

Earlier on June 10, the ZSUN had submitted a 7-day ultimatum to the Chief Minister and High Power Committee through the Deputy Commissioner, Peren demanding prompt action regarding the irresponsible handling of the COVID-19 positive returnee on June 3 and establishment of COVID Hospital in the district with modern facilities.

“Aggrieved over the paltry vindication of the state government conveyed through the level of Deputy Commissioner Peren on 18th June 2020, The Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Nagaland stand by its ultimatum submitted to the Chief Minister who is the Chairman of high power committee, on 10th June, 2020,” the ZSUN stated on Tuesday.

It highlighted the growing number of COVID-19 positive cases in the district and the inadequate facilities in the Peren district COVID 19 hospital, and stated that the indifferent attitude of the present day government to the demand of the Union is “nothing but a step motherly treatment towards the demand and fears of district people.”

Speaking to The Morung Express, ZSUN General Secretary said that the rally on Tuesday was organized as their plea had fallen on deaf ears. “The Government is asking us to withdraw our ultimatum without any assurance, without any positive response,” he said.

He added that the government instead referred to “lame excuses” of having provided some machines in the district, and asked them to withdraw the ultimatum.

The ZSUN in its press statement reiterated that it would continue to intensify the agitation and resort to more stringent measures in the coming days until their Charter of Demand is fulfilled at the earliest.

“Failure to comply with this ultimatum will invite consequence of extreme degree and for which the state government will be held solely responsible,” it warned.

After the rally on June 23, the participants marched to the Deputy Commissioner Peren’s office and submitted a reaffirmation of its June 10 ultimatum to the Chief Minister who is also the Chairman of High Power Committee through the DC, Peren.

“The genuine appeal of the district cannot be ignored and compromised at the level of discourse without any assurance and promises,” the Union stated.

It demanded immediate provision of adequate tools and machineries to set up makeshift ICU and BSL-2 lab in the Peren District Hospital. It also demanded establishment of 100 bedded COVID Hospital in the district with modern facilities at the earliest, with adequate staff to man the hospital. The Government of Nagaland must initiate prompt action against the erring officials involved in the June 3 fiasco, it added.

The ZSUN further announced that more rallies will be held in the district from June 24 to 26.

According to the Union, rallies will be held in Jalukie on June 24, Ngwalwa on June 25 and in Tening on June 26.
