Mokokchung police on Monday arrested one Akangnungba (40) on charges of rape following an FIR lodged by the victim’s father. The accused, hailing from Mongsenyimti village and presently residing at Sungkomen Ward, Mokokchung town, who manages a care center for special needs children, has already been forwarded to judicial custody. Police reports have confirmed that medical examination of the victim has been done and that results are awaited.
Meanwhile, five protesters who assembled at the Mokokchung Police Station 1 this afternoon, demanding the police give them evidence that the accused has been caught, were taken into custody by the police for causing chaos at the police station premises.
According to eyewitness accounts, the protesters were beaten and detained by the police and still in police custody till the filing of this report. The detained five were sent for medical examination when local scribes went to the police station. Police declined to give any information on their condition.
