DIMAPUR, MARCH 26 (MExN): One man facing trial in a rape case dating to September 2013 has been sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI). The judgment was delivered by the Principal District & Session Judge, Dimapur on March 25.
According to a press release issued by Public Prosecutor (PP) T. Marlemba, the defendant, identified as one Bongpha was arrested in connection to the rape of a physically challenged woman in Dimapur. The case was registered and investigated by the Diphupar Police Station.
“The prosecution case was proved beyond any shadow of doubt. The judge further recommended for award of Compensation to the victim to DDLSA U/S 357-A Cr.PC from the Victim Compensation Scheme,” stated the PP in the release.
“I have considered the facts and circumstances and I am of the opinion that a sentence of 10 years RI would be appropriate. Accordingly accused Bongpha is sentenced to 10 (ten) years imprisonment for offence U/376 (2) (I) IPC with a fine of Rs. 500/- in default to undergo sentence accordingly,” read the judgment order. He was also informed of his right to appeal.
