MOKOKCHUNG, MARCH 26 (MExN): The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has appealed the citizens of Mokokchung to adhere to the public advisories issued by the state government on the matter of COVID-19 “so that we can, together, contain the situation.”
“Our traders remain open to serve the people even at the risk of contracting the virus and thus putting the lives of ourselves and of our families in peril,” the MCCI said in a press release.
The request came in the backdrop of panic buying and hoarding by residents on March 26 despite repeated assurances that there is sufficient stock of essential commodities and uninterrupted transportation of goods.
During the frenzied buying on Thursday, the release said that “some customers” taking advantage of the pandemonium slipped away without making payments.
While stating that there were also instances of customers harassing traders, the MCCI requested the citizens to calm down and exhibit common sense. “If the traders are to be harassed and looted while serving the people… then there is no point in keeping the shops open,” it said.
Meanwhile, directing the traders to comply with the advisories issued by the government, it warned of penalty for those indulging in business malpractices.
