In response to the news items published in the local newspapers of Nagaland dated 14-7-2001 and 16-7-2011 by the NUNTSA and joint staff and students of Nagaland University, I, Dr. P.H. Naik, Registrar, would like to set the record straight once and for all as under;
1.First of all, I tender unconditional apology for hurting the sentiments of the members of the Nagaland University community, Villagers, Underground brethrens and the People of Nagaland, in general, because of my letter to the MHRD, dated 19-11-2010.
2. However, I would like to clarify and narrate the circumstances leading to the writing of the said letter. On joining the University, there was a lot of unrest with numerous allegations against Prof. K. Kannan, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University. I, being a tribal myself tried to solve those problems. My suggestions for betterment of the University were completely ignored by the Vice Chancellor and in many instances the Vice Chancellor forced me to accept his ideas which were contrary to the development of the Nagaland University. We may recollect the last agitation at Kohima when the Vice Chancellor left me alone at Kohima during the crisis and he ran away to Lumami and ordered me to file FIRs against the agitating NUTA and NUNTSA office bearers. I, being new to such situations and the Vice Chancellor being the Head, I obliged. There are also instances where some of our own officers have witnessed when I was forced by the Vice Chancellor to put up certain files with favourable notings without letting me even study the case/file to serve his own selfish ends.
3. Right after shifting of the University Headquarters to Lumami, I started initiating various developmental works to make the University headquarters habitable for students and staff. In the process of developing the University, the staff, students and the land donors enthusiastically supported for the welfare of the University. Knowing that I was getting familiar with the local situations and gaining close proximity with the local people, the Vice Chancellor became very insecure. He feared that his dictatorial position will be undermined, whereas I had no such intentions but, to support him. Then, he started the cycle of harassment, intimidation, created hurdles and enmity in the functioning of the University. The Vice Chancellor went even to the extend of removing my basic necessities in office and at home like Fridge, Gas connection and even my allowances. When the harassment became intolerable, I shared my problems with some of the teachers and staff and they also sympathized with my situation. In the midst of all these, the Vice Chancellor asked me to tender my resignation. I was also too frustrated and disturbed to continue, hence, I tendered my resignation as desired. As there was no reasonable cause for accepting my resignation, the Vice Chancellor dictated me to write the letter to the MHRD, stating the unfavourable local situation to make it a pre-condition for acceptance of the resignation. However, even after following his instruction my resignation was not accepted just to harass me further and brought forward flimsy allegations against me to drag the matter to the Executive Council.
4. After waiting for a long time, I wrote, repeatedly to the Vice Chancellor, to relieve me from my post but again it was not accepted the reasons for that also not assigned, and just hanged me, in between, inhuman way. By this time I was not getting salary for the past so many months and myself and my family was literally driven to the streets. Meanwhile, I had also sought redressal from the Hon’ble High Court. Since I had no means of income to support myself and my family, the opportunity to serve the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University at Lucknow came, on the condition that I must submit my relieving order from Nagaland University. The relieving order was not issued and the opportunity to earn my livelihood is now being lost, which is denial of basic human rights, right to earn and right to live. Therefore, I withdrew my resignation letter and the Court case so that I may join the Nagaland University but again I was denied. Therefore, I appeal that the University takes a positive decision immediately.
