Rengma students clarify on job quota, spl recruitment drive

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 7 (MExN): The President of the Rengma Students Union (HQ Tseminyu) Kenneth Rengma has clarified on the news report “NPSC floats advt for 10 EAC posts” (Morung Express) and termed it as “unethical”. Firstly the RSU President stated that he was never interviewed by the said correspondent and that he did not know the correspondent. Kenneth Rengma stated that the correspondent may have talked to NSF leaders or he may be privy to inside information on the issue of job reservation. “But that does not give him the right to quote or use my name in his article. My permission should have been sought not the least because the issue of job reservation is very sensitive harboring potential for unrests in the state”, stated the rejoinder from the RSU President.
Stating that some of the words/sentences “are in double inverted commas”, the rejoinder pointed out that this was giving the impression to readers that he was quoted in an interview “which was not and which is highly unethical on the part of the journalist”. Having clarified his stand on the issue, Kenneth Rengma has stated the “correct version of the Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) stand on job reservation”.
The RSU stated that it was “undeniable that Rengmas are being denied justice as far as job reservation policy is concerned and the present Special Recruitment Drive conducted by NPSC is an acknowledgement of our grievances by the State government”. However, the RSU also pointed out that it was the imperative of the government “to find the root cause of dissent and discontent in the present reservation policy instead of enhancing job quotas and any other arrangements which may be temporary in nature inorder to prevent feelings of deprivation and for this a total review of the job reservation policy by the government is needed”.
It was stated that in the past 15 years, i.e from 1989 to 2004, out of the 196 posts of EAC/DSP advertised by NPSC, “Rengmas failed to get inside these services for reasons beyond our control”.
Therefore, RSU started demanding reservation in jobs under the backward category for the interest of its future generation, it stated. Terming this demand as genuine, the RSU stated that Rengmas comprise only 3.07% (govt. data) of the total government workforce; one of the least amongst the 16 tribes. Thus, since 2003, several proposals and suggestions were submitted by RSU to various government committees on job reservation but to no avail, it stated.
“Therefore, the present exercise of the government in listing Rengmas with the other backward tribes under the Special Recruitment Drive for the post of 10 EACs is not wrong per se for it is a start nevertheless in ushering equality in our society, however limited in scope, stated the RSU while adding that as far as the reservation issue is concerned, Rengmas are still on the receiving end and the State Cabinet decision on Special Recruitment for less represented tribes is an open acknowledgement of their grievances, “however contentious the issue and this recruitment drive is one of the methods which can serve the purpose of delivering equality and justice”.
In the greater interest of society, the RSU also appealed to the government to review the present system of job reservation as demanded by NSF and “proper pocket identification be made so that all sections of society including less represented tribes like Rengmas are given a fair chance to participate which in turn will ensure social justice”.
