Rio underscores vital link between health and vibrant society

Dimapur | June 26 : Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has underscored the importance of health and healthcare to make a vibrant society.  “Health is wealth. If you want to build a vibrant society, you have to build a healthy society,” Rio said in his address at the 5th executive meeting of All India organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), NE Zone, held at Niathu Resort, Dimapur, on Sunday.
Stating that chemists and druggists play a vital role in building a healthy society, Rio called upon the chemists and druggists not only to propagate sale of medicines but also to spread knowledge and awareness on health. Referring to the deluge of fake, spurious and expired medicines in the Indian market and medicine counters, he called members of AIOCD to be strict and vigilant in checking such menaces.
Terming the profession of chemists and druggist as a noble one, the chief minister said they should be persons of integrity and humane in their approach since the lives of millions of people depended on them.  Rio said that in the present world where health consciousness has grown, there is also a giant leap in the field of health care and medicines.
He said that the Government of India has special industrial policy for the North Eastern Region and that most of the NE states have their own industrial policies, where healthcare and drugs industry too can flourish. Rio also welcomed drug companies to invest in Nagaland.
AIOCD vice president Dr. Natwarlal Agarwala in his speech said that AIOCD formed 35 years ago and with present with 7.5 lakh members is the biggest medicine dealers’ union in the world. The AIOCD vice president urged the governments of NE states and chief minister Neiphiu Rio look into the communication and transportation problems so that life –saving medicines can reach every nook and corner of the region. AIOCD observer V Jagushte also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, Nagaland Medicine Dealer’s Association (NMDA) president in his welcome address thanked chief minister Rio for being responsive and sensitive to the welfare of all sections of people and trade, including the medicine dealers.  NMDA general secretary (Org), Basu Damani proposed vote of thanks.
