“Despite the changes taking place in the global economic scenario, cooperatives continues to be very much relevant in our State and we need to reorient ourselves to face the challenges that lie ahead,” Chitri said. She added that cooperative structure has a deeper outreach and provides doorstep delivery for flow of credit particularly in rural and backward areas and to the weaker section of society and provides a unique system of economic emancipation and freedom to the poor and provides an alternative to money lenders who dominate the rural credit scene. Urging the entrepreneurs from various districts to be patience, sincere and dedicated, she shared that cooperatives can do a lot in improving the economic conditions of farmers and other rural poor provided they improve their competitive strength and conduct their operations on sound business line like any other economic enterprise.
T. Imkonglemla Longkumer, Registrar of co-operatives societies in her special address said cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise that imbibes the value of self-help, self-independent, democracy, equality and solidarity. She also said that the state is going through major socio-economic changes and unemployment is on the rise that has become a serious issue and the new generation of young entrepreneurs are entering the market through the availability of micro-credit facilities where through micro-financing has given these entrepreneurs/businessmen a platform and a signboard to venture into new areas and compete with other established players. Longkumer threw a challenge to EATACOL to maintain transparency in all dealings and inculcate honest work culture thereby banishing corruption in every practices, to set aside certain percentage of funds to specifically propagate thrift and credit education among the masses and to the upcoming entrepreneurs and to identify and reach out to enterprising youths from the neglected lower strata of the society.
