RTI promoting transparency in governing systems

Kohima | October 14 : MLA and Advisor IT & TE Vikho Yhoshü said Right to information (RTI) Act has been passed by the parliament to link between the people and the government and also to empower the people of the nation to participate in the government in distinct manner and to promote transparency in the governing system.
RTI awareness for youth: The Kohima campaign under the theme “Youth for transparency” has launched its three month campaign under the aegis of Department of personnel and Training, Government of India, Administrative Training Institute (ATI) and YouthNet at ATI this morning with MLA and Advisor IT & TE Vikho Yhoshü as the chief guest. Addressing the mammoth gathering, Yhoshü said RTI is to share information with people especially the power and duties of government and reminded that people in government service are in the service and interest of the general public. Yoshü also said on the need to improve every department’s website and should maintain the requirements that public should know. “Youth are the learners but leaders of tomorrow,” said Yhoshü adding that by filing RTI, it will be a challenging for the government to maintain proper record and share relevant information including checks and balances that will result less corruption and more transparency. He also acknowledged the YouthNet to be a living example of inspiration and urged the students to carry forward the message of justice.
Director YouthNet, Hekani Jakhalu in her keynote address said that the campaign is a joint initiative of government and YouthNet with the purpose to empower youth/students to become active members in the society to check corruption and to assist government to bring transparency, accountability and good governance. She added that it aims to assist and encourage the government departments to become more proactive in disclosing the information as per the Act, thereby promoting transparency and accountability.
The programme was chaired by director ATI, V. Shanshank Shekhar while Dr. Hovithal N. Sothu, Nodl Officer DoPT & APIO, ATI delivered vote of thanks.
YouthNet said that besides practical training to the youth/students attending the seminar cum workshop, the campaign will offer an opportunity to the youth and the public at large to draft RTI Application addressed to any department in the state and submit to YouthNet through any of YouthNet drop boxes, placed at Naga paper agency, high school, Seasons’ café and Bunny Studio Town Area and big bite, jail colony. It also stated that the applications received in the drop boxes shall be submitted by YouthNet to the concerned department on/his behalf and the liberty shall lie with the applicant on whether he/she wants to reflect his/her name in the RTI application and if he/she prefers anonymity, the application shall go in the name of YouthNet.
YouthNet will also publish some best questions of the week through local dailies, so that government departments are reminded to give good response and on time.
YouthNet will also open a page on Facebook “Youth for transparency” to reach out to bloggers and the replies to RTI queries shall be made available on discs and the Facebook page.
