Sechü (Zubza) flower festival highlights floricultural potential

The 4th edition of Sechü (Zubza) Flower Festival 2025 commenced today at Liezha B’ Colony, along National Highway 29 under the aegis of Sechü (Zubza) Youth Organization in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Nagaland.

Sechü (Zubza) is located around 15 km northwest of Kohima.

Gracing the inaugural function as the special guest, S Senka, Joint Director, Department of Horticulture, maintained that Sechü (Zubza) possesses immense potential for growing flowers, driven by diverse agro-climatic conditions.

In this, he stressed on the need to intensify floricultural products in the area. He said that the floriculture has grown into a high-performing sector, earning status as a "Sunrise Industry." Senka said that flowers are increasingly used for industrial extracting perfumes, flavours, colours and medicines. It has a strong export potential, he said.

He cited the top 10 imported flowers In India as Tulips, Peonies, Lilies (Lillium & Calla lilies), Orchids, Carnations, Hydrangeas, Eustomas (Lisianthus) and Proteas.

During 2024-25, India invested (fiscal year ends in March 2025) on live trees, plants, bulbs, roots and cut flowers, costing US$ 54.15 million (Rs 48.4.53 crore). On specific flower imports during October 2023 to September 2024, India imported 4,638 shipments of fresh cut flowers.

The export flower from India includes Roses, Jasmine, Orchids, Gerberas, Carnations, Chrysanthemum, Lilies, Tuberose, Gladiolus, Crossandra, Pot plants. These flowers are exported to United States, Germany, and United Kingdom.

During the financial year 2024-25, India earned approximately USD 22 million (Rs. 196.85 crore) from the export of flowers, Senka said. This revenue was generated from the export of 5412.09 metric tonnes of floriculture products, he said.

Sechü  (Zubza) Youth Organization President, Apelie Rino said that around 50 stalls has been set up in this 4th edition flower festival, which will continue till December 10.

He said that Sechü (Zubza) Youth Organization has started this flower festival in 2022 in collaboration with the horticulture department to facilitate a market facility to the flower growers.

Since then, almost every household in Sechü (Zubza) are benefiting from this event, he said.

Almost every variety of flowers including vegetables grow very well in Sechü (Zubza) area, he said. Florist Neikhrieno Nagi said that there are around 40 flower growers within Sechü (Zubza).
Some individuals are earning Rs 2-3 lakh through floriculture.
