Seminar on ‘Essential Newborn Care’ held

A seminar on “Essential Newborn Care” in commemoration of New Born Care Week was held here yesterday under the aegis of the department of Health and Family Welfare.
Nagaland State Commission for Women chairperson, Sano Vamuzo described the medical department as a crucial department as it deals with the most important gift of God, which is life. “People look up to doctors and nurses as being next to God, particularly when they are faced with sickness,” she said.
Appreciating the efforts of the State Health Society, National Rural Health Mission and the department of Health and Family Welfare in taking care of public health in general and women and children in particular, she reminded the department that in the rural areas, there is still much to be done for the improvement and application of all the health facilities that are made available to the people. “What we all need to do at this juncture is to educate and sensitize our people especially in the rural areas, to know their rights and the roles they are expected to play in delivering the facilities to the grassroots people,” she added.
She further said that the role of mothers on newborn management cannot be overemphasized as it involves the life of an individual and stressed on the need for mothers to be aware of whatever facilities are available for them in order to ensure the healthy growth and development of the child.
The chairperson also stated that the Nagaland State Women Commission while on tour to all the districts has visited the district hospitals making a point to visit the female and maternity wards and informed that the Commission have been reporting their findings and observations to the government, requesting the government to give more attention to the needs of women with regards to related facilities such as labor room, labor tables, new born baby-care centers, toilets etc.
Additional Director and SPO (RCH), Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Khanlo Magh who talked on the importance of Millennium Development goal 4 (MDG 4) informed that MDGs are a set of numerical and time-bound targets to measure achievements in human and social development. “MDG 4 is one of the 8 millennium developmental goals envisaged to reduce child morality, i.e the target is to reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under 5 morality rate,” he said.
Senior Pediatrician, NHAK Dr. Visasieu Kire and Pediatrician and SMO, Viswema CHC, Dr. Ruutuou Sorhie also gave presentation on child cares entitled “Essential New Born Care” and “Preventing Newborn Deaths through care and management” respectively.
Commissioner and Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Menukhol John chaired the prorgramme while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Kevichusa Medikhru, Joint Director & SPO, NRHM.
