• Women orgs demand stringent action against culprit
• Accused escape from police custody, re-apprehended
DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 13 (MExN): In a delayed report reaching here, a minor aged 11 years was allegedly raped by her step- father. The incident occurred on October 9 in Phek district. According to reports, the accused, hailing from Regury village was taken into custody by the Meluri police with intervention from different women organizations. He however managed to escape while under police custody but was re-apprehended by the Village Guards of Reguri village.
Different organizations have since then condemned the incident. The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) while expressing shock and resentment on the incident said such beastly acts called for condemnation from all walks of life. While appreciating the timely intervention of the wife of the accused along with the Meluri Town Women Organisation and the Pochury Mothers’ Association and all concerned citizens, the NMA also appreciated the enormous task of re-apprehending the accused by the Village Guards of Reguri village after he escaped from the police custody at Meluri. The NMA has questioned the intent of the policemen on duty as to how he was led to escape from their custody, and demand proper investigation be made on this regard.
It has therefore urged the state government to give proper security to the wife and daughter, and rehabilitating them; due punishment be given to all erring personnel on duty and the accused be given rigorous punishment as per law. In a separate press statement, the Pochury Mothers’ Association (PMA) and Pochury Women Organization, Kohima (PWOK) has vehemently condemned the ‘barbaric and devilish act.’ The PMA and PWOK while condemning the incident urged the law enforcing agencies to deal with the culprit in the strongest possible manner.
While urging the law enforcing agencies not to show any mercy but mete out punishment as per the latest prevailing law and award the severest action to the culprit so as to avoid similar cases in future, the women organizations has also demanded that the police personnel from whose custody the culprit escaped should also be punished according to the law.
