Should Hindi be a compulsory subject for students from the North East region?

Some of those who voted  YES had this to say:

•    Yes, this is the only way to compete with the Indians. The people in Delhi and other places think that we northeasterners are up to no good and that we get things easy because of the quota system. I say lets give it back to them.
•    Yes, Hindi should be a compulsory subject for students from North East. But compulsory does not mean it should be a credit subject – meaning, it can still be compulsory without having to be marked for it. The purpose of making Hindi compulsory should be for teaching and learning the language, and not for marking purposes.
•    For me personal GON & GOI have invested a lot for Hindi language for our school system. For us to learn Hindi is economic power. For business in India Hindi and English is must.
•    Schools already have Hindi teachers. They are paid to teach. The question is what are they teaching? It has to start early. This is not simply a Naga phenomenon. People learn English, French, German etc etc. We have been given opportunity to learn but we did not pay attention. Discussion such as this quickly becomes emotional rather than intellectual and rational. Nagaland have no economic engine our Rupees all come from Delhi. We in some way have no right to say no. If I was starting I will do it. I will learn read and write in Hindi; not just speak broken Hindi. But this is me.
•    Yes, Outside nagaland they use only hindi.
•    During my high school days, Hindi was a compulsory subject in our school for classes 3 to 7. this turned out to be helpful for me. in my first stay in Delhi, i worked smoothly because Hindi language was like a 2nd mother tongue for me, honestly and i feel that Hindi should be made compulsory all over NE so that first timers in big cities won't have to struggle in communicating with the locals there.

Some of those who voted NO  had this to say:

•    No, no, no, not at all! All the north east region don’t like Hindi. Some like me just abhore it. Besides it wont be good for the development of this region because the masses don’t have any good background in this language moreover they are not much interested in it and are instead used to English which makes this region a bit more developed in our heart than those where people don’t speak English in India.
•    No, not at all. Our children find difficulty coping with Hindi. Other foreign languages may be offered.
•    No, because as a concerned Naga, I experience that almost 95% of Naga(s) lack in writing hindi and 20 percent in speaking hindi, so I wish not to adopt compulsory subject for Naga’s though others may adopt it.
•    Forget compulsory. The truth from my experience. MIL you have a choice and you can choose French in the south and you can buy it. Let me not explain further.
•    No, because our medium of learning is still ENGLISH.
•    If it has to be then it should be imparted compulsory from the primary level..otherwise 'NO'
•    I don't think it should be compulsory coz majority of nagas are weak in Hindi n they give more interest to English. But yes being an Indian citizen we also need Hindi. Interested students may pursue...
•    Learning and mandatory subject is a different domain of learning.. Some people find it difficult to learn and write hindi but maybe well versed in english or other MIL subjects which may could prove fatal in their academic career... Its wise not to keep hindi as a mandatory subject...
•    Hindi/MIL will become tougher than Biology/Physics/Chemistry/History/Social Science etc etc....so, should the students of NE burn our midnight oil for Hindi/MIL or concentrate on other subjects?? so a BIG NO!
•    Hindi need not be a compulsory subject. The basics should be known but making it a compulsory or a main subject is not necessary. Usually we don't write any official reports or stuffs like in Hindi. But for me learning how to speak and understand is very required and that is possible by regular or casual conversation. As for me honestly i learned alot through televisions.
•    No, hindi shouldn't be compulsory but it should rather be an optional subject where students can choose accordingly.
• Naga are not indian.
• a big no. even people from south will opposed it. the world have become a global village and only english is the key to reach out to the world. warning for the nagas is if namo come to power or npf alliance come to power all nagas have to flea  for foreign land because we cannot understand their talk. they do not know english.
• First learn your own mother tongue, the language in which your mind function, then all other can be added.
• no, because its a thief of time.
• No, Compulsory till class 8 is fine but not later.
• no,no,no,no, it should nt be made compulsory, instead y dn't we make our language more important than HINDI
• we are a linguistic state. we can do without addition.
• No. But big but. we need to learn so long as North east is part of Bharat.
• No, hindi should not be imposed. India is a land of diversity and there are many languages and therefore no language should be imposed. Should Ao and Angami language be imposed on people in Punjab and Harayana? These people will have pass in their exams. Atleast students from NE are passing in their Hindi. There is no harm if hindi is offered as a course for learning, but it is unfair to be tested in it. If hindi is mandatory, than Naga languages should also be compulsory for mainland Indians. Then we will not complain.

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:

• Hindi subject is good to learn by not necessary to take as a subject, because hindi language is only for 60% of Indian and 40% have their own mother tongue. We should give more importance to English subject because it is a world language.
•    In this large melting pot of Indian society where every good Indian citizen irrespective of everything does try to live up to the noble ideal of unity in diversity, no individual or institution in his/her/its right frame of mind would dare being conceived and nurture such an idea of imposing one’s will on the other whish in our Indian definition is communalism in nature. Speaking of the devil, here comes the North-Easterners! Perish the thought or nib it in the bud once and for all for good.
•    I want to know the hidden agenda behind this?.. if not why make it mandatory............?
•    Usually, Hindi is taken by matric dropouts in an alarming manner in our state, so if this thing goes without any objections, then we know what? Even NPSC will have start to cadre Hindi EACs and DSPs in near future.
•    The crust of the issue is not about Yes or No. The choice should be open-ended. In WB&South 4 eg, they are given an option either to pick their vernacular or one foregin paper. So, likewise it would be wise to keep it open.
•    I am not saying those that are in college to take Hindi exam or read and write. It has to start early and build our education system that will enhance Hindi competency. Whether we like it or not India will always be our neighbor. Nagas will always go to India for education as well as job. We must prepare ourselves. We cannot disadvantage ourselves.
•    It should be a matter of "self interest rather than imposition"
•    South Indian preferred to speak English rather than Hindi.
•    Hindi should be taught as non credited course
•    Depends on students choices.make it optional subj n there wudnt have been debate.
•    If i had to survive and support my family then i will learn whatever it takes to make it. But it should be a choice, the winner get's it all. Part of it is also being a citizen of your country and working together. I learned it and i would not trade it for anything.
•    In a country like india where there r diverse culture, language, ethnics n castes, imposing a particular system upon other will be a disaster. Educational institutions n universities r a place where one learns n develops his mental, physical, intellectual n other all round devps n language should not be a barrier to it.
•    Keeping it as an optional subject.....
•    It should be left to the students to take up or leave it by opting 4 other subjects. but naga students... no harm in knowing the INDIAN lit. n language.
•    democratic country everybody has a right to choose his /her own will as long as it does not against the constitution.
