Vehicle registration in Nagaland from January to June in last three years was highest in 2022; though, it is yet to recover to pre-COVID-19 pandemic level.

As per the data available on VAHAN dashboard, a total of 13,122 vehicles were registered in Nagaland from January 1-June 30 in 2022, up from 9773 registered during the corresponding period in 2021, indicating a 34.26% increase.

Likewise, just 8924 vehicles were registered during January-June period in 2020, highlighted the Dashboard, a centralised database of vehicles maintained by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH).

However, it is yet to reach the pre-pandemic level registration, though there seem to be a revival in demand for vehicles.
The six-month January-June figure for 2019 and 2018 stood at 16,539 and 17,163 respectively. (See Table)

While registration of vehicles has been on a downward trend since 2019, it decreased drastically in 2020 and 2021, particularly in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, after the imposition of lockdown measures and other factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

For instance, registration from April-August in 2020 was just 2142, while it was just 11 in July. The period had the strictest restriction associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though, things improved thereafter, the onset of second-wave saw registration falling from 2304 in April 2021 to 408 in May, which further declined to 354 in June.

Since then, however, registration has recovered averaging over 2000 per month from July 2021 to June 2022.

As per the VAHAN dashboard assessed on July 10, overall, there were 21,881 vehicle registrations in Nagaland in 2021, up from 16,212 in 2020 or by 34.97%. In 2019, there were 29,129 vehicles registrations in Nagaland, indicating the impact of the pandemic.

Nationally, there were 1.68 crore registrations in 2021, up 2.62% from 2020 at 1.64 crore. In 2019, there were 2.15 crore vehicle registrations in India.

Heavy Goods Vehicles lead registrations
Overall, a total of 3.88 lakh vehicles have been registered in Nagaland, where all the 9 RTOs/DTO offices are using the VAHAN 4.0, a web based online application for issue of vehicle registration certificate.

Incidentally, out of 13,620 registrations till July 10 in 2022, the category of vehicle with highest registrations is Heavy Goods Vehicle (HPV) at 4861, followed by Light Motor Vehicle at 4233.

Two-wheeler (non-transport) was third at 3073, followed by Light Goods Vehicle at 650.

Electric (Battery operated Vehicles) continued to be ignored by consumers as there were no new registrations in 2nd quarter (April-June), while there were just 3 on April 1, when The Morung Express assessed registration for  1st quarter (January-March) of 2022.

Meanwhile, among the ‘high-end’ vehicles, there was one registration for Harley Davidson in 2nd quarter while registration of Jaguar Land Rover India and Mercedes-Benz increased from 1 to 2 each. There were 2 Audi registrations while numbers for Royal-Enfield also increased from 106 in April 1 to 173, till July 10.

As observed in earlier analysis, the sale of relatively premium cars and such as Isuzu, Skoda and MG Motors showed upward trend. Registrations for construction equipment and machinery (vehicles) were also noticeable.

Meanwhile, based on automobile manufacturing companies designated as ‘Maker,’ Tata Motors Ltd overtook Maruti Suzuki India Ltd in registrations during the 2nd quarter at  3026 and  2,234 respectively. During the first quarter, the latter had 1412 registrations against 1285 for the former.

Ashok Leyland Ltd was on the third with 1440 registrations, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (1023).

In the two/three wheeler segment, Hero Motocorp Ltd at 839 overtook Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) Ltd at 772 in the 2nd quarter. TVS Motor Company Ltd followed next at 608, while there were 331 registrations for Bajaj Auto Ltd.

Interestingly, there were 12 registrations for Tata Advanced Systems Ltd, set up in 2007 and self-described as Tata Group’s “strategic entity in the Aerospace & Defence industry” with six focus areas – aerospace, UAVs, missiles, radars, command & control and homeland security.
