Chümoukedima, March 26 (MExN): An exposure trip for MA Rural Development fourth semester students of St Joseph University was organised from March 16 to 20, under the theme “Learning from the Grassroots” to provide practical insights into rural development practices and community engagement.

A total of 21 students participated, accompanied by Assistant Professors Kezhakhoto Chalieu and Dr Janet Gonmei.

On March 17, the group visited Mawdun village, a model village adopted by Green Tech Foundation, where they were briefed by the chairman and village leaders on sustainable practices, including waste management, afforestation and community participation in maintaining ecological balance.

The students gained first-hand experience of the role of NGOs in empowering rural communities and promoting environmental sustainability.

On March 18, the group visited Reach Shillong Ministries, where project coordinator Arnold explained various initiatives such as children’s homes, open day shelters, educational sponsorship programmes, adoption services and 24-hour crisis management.

The visit helped students understand the challenges faced by vulnerable groups and the importance of social support systems.

The exposure trip to Shillong, Meghalaya, provided valuable insights into community-driven development, environmental sustainability and social work practices, enriching students’ academic learning and encouraging them to contribute to rural development initiatives.
