Dimapur, October 11 (MExN): As part of the global celebrations of World Space Week, the Department of Physics, St John College (SJC), Dimapur organised a week-long celebration from October 4 to 10.

On October 4, a joint wall magazine- ‘Spectra’ was launched by Mathematics and Physics department. The wall magazine was inaugurated by SJC, Vice Principal Dr Sumita Banik Saha, and the significance of the publication was briefly explained by Nukshichila, 3rd year Physics Honours student, stated a press release.

The magazine touches upon diverse aspects of space missions, including the first international and Indian missions, various technologies involved in space exploration, like rocket dynamics, gravity assists, important historical missions like Apollo and Voyager, Indian missions like Chandrayaan 3, etc.

The ‘daily life impact of space missions’ was discussed by Soumyajit Pramanick, HoD of Physics Department, in the form of a presentation on October 5. The agenda of the presentation was to emphasize upon how various fields of technology got benefitted through space exploration projects, including miniature electronics, water purification system, digital cameras, virtual reality tools, various detectors, etc. The implications of Earth observation and climate monitoring satellites and their myriad applications were also discussed, along with how satellites have changed communication navigation, and even medical technology. Concerns regarding unfettered space entrepreneurship when there is lack of regulatory framework, concerns of equitable distribution of fruits of space technology were raised through the presentation as well.

An extempore competition was organised on October 9 on the theme of space exploration. The first three positions were secured by Anjali Kumari, Chemistry Department; Wapangshilu Imsong, Mathematics Department; and Y Chingmei, Zoology Department.

The World Space Week concluded with model presentations by the students of the department on October 10. The models of Lunar Base, Chandrayaan 3 Lander and Rover, and international space station were built, and demonstrated by first, second and third-year students respectively.
