State CCF highlights need to encourage medicinal plants

Dimapur, October 22 (MExN): Addressing the regional workshop on “Review of National guidelines for joint forest management with a stronger focus on the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants” at Shillong on October 21 Dr. K Kire (IFS), Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of Nagaland has pointed out the emerging need to encourage medicinal plant cultivation in North-East India since it can generate employment avenues in North East.
A press note received here informed that the workshop was organized jointly by Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal and Meghalaya Forest Department, Shillong and sponsored by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) New Delhi, Global Environment Facility-MOEF, GoI.
The Chief Conservator of Forest urged on the need for enhanced funds for the welfare and empowerment of Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) and the producers of NTFPs in the region. “With improved transport and information system, methodical and judicious exploitation of forest resources had become necessity. However, JFMC has been given less importance,” lamented Dr. Kire. He also emphasized on the need for cultivation of specific medicinal plants which have economic values. He further underlined the need for the sister states to have mutual understanding and do away with all the transport hitches pertaining to forest produce.
The regional event was attended by several IFS officers of North-east, Prominent of whom were, VK Nautiyal, IFS PCCF & HoFF, Meghalaya, Prof. AK  Dharni, IFS, C.P Marak IFS CCF (T) Meghalaya, CCF of Manipur, Mizoram, research scholars, Professors of NEHU and Prominent NGOs of the region including Legacy Explorers, the lone NGO from Nagaland.
