State experiencing more cyber crime, DGP says

Dimapur, October 15 (MExN): The Nagaland Police Department conducted two days orientation course on cyber crime and cyber forensics for senior police officers at PHQ Conference Hall from October 12 and 13 with resource persons from RIELIT, Nagaland. Neiba Newmai, SP (Crime) PHQ, in a press note informed that the two days orientation course conducted by and under the aegis of Regional Institute of E-Learning Technology (RILIET), Nagaland was a structured mandatory course for all Superintendents of District Police and Commandants in the State.
The DGP Nagaland, in his inaugural address, attended by all senior police officer in PHQ, admitted that investigation of cyber crimes is complex since  evidence crucial for prosecution is often in an intangible form and thus its collection, appreciation, analysis and preservation present a unique challenge to the investigator. He further stated that of late even the state is beginning to experience more cyber-related offences especially with the advent and use of the fourth mode of communication i.e. the internet in the form of transactions of money, pictures and videos. Internet provides anonymity and safety. Unlike other forms of crimes wherein the person undertakes considerable risk, cyber crime provides the criminal with a cover. He leaves no physical footprints, fingerprints or other tangible traces making it extremely difficult to track cyber criminals down. He urged the RIELIT and the police officers to maintain a close professional working relationship in tackling cyber offences elaborating that since cyber crime is technology driven, the law enforcing agencies and its subsidiaries should also evolve continuously to cope with the challenges.
During the two day Orientation Course, the DY. Director/Scientist ‘C’ L. Lanuwabang, Dy. Asst Director A. Moriwabang and their supporting staffs of RIELIT, Nagaland, Kohima covered a wide ranging aspects of cyber crime and cyber forensic fundamentals such as “data acquisition, sterilizing evidence, media-forensic, acquiring forensic image with software, acquiring forensic image with hardware, data analysis including file signature analysis, performing searches, recovering deleted data etc. emphasis was also given to identifying system resource affected, identifying file dependencies, verifying file integrity, collecting volatile data. pros and cons of system shutdown  order of volatility (memory, process, network, registry) collection and analysis on a live windows system, volatile evidence in incident response, internet forensics, reconstructing past internet activities, e-mail analysis, analyzing cache and temporary internet files and mobile forensics including handheld forensics and collecting and analyzing cell phones  evidence, recovering and reconstructing deleted data passwords and encryption, password attacks tools and techniques, passwords and storage locations, and password cracking and recovery. The entire Orientation Course was ably coordinated by Neiba Newmai, SP (Crime) PHQ, who was also the designated the Course Coordinator of the orientation programme.
As a part of the Orientation Course, the police officers were also taken to RIELIT Lab, Meriema for hands-on exposure of the various cyber forensic tools available at the RIELIT Institute.
At the end of the two days course, Certification of Participation was given to the senior police officer who attended the course. The course closed with the Valedictory Address by the Addl Director General (OpS), Nagaland L Thechamo Lotha (IPS) on 13th October 2011.
