Kohima: The Nagaland State Branch, Indian Red Cross Society today occupied prominent space in the diary of well wishers and general public as it observed World Red Cross Day, highlighting various activities towards the service of the humanity.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, minister for health and family welfare Dr. T.M Lotha urged upon all the volunteers, members of the state Red Cross Society to come forward and encourage one another and contribute generously so that the state branch is strengthened in the service of the society and humanity.
The minister stated that the original concept and basic aim of Red Cross Society is to care for the sick and wounded in the war. But over the years the activities of the Red Cross has increased manifold. It has rendered humanitarian service not only to war torn areas and battlefield but in many other areas so as to help relieve suffering caused by both natural calamities and man made disasters.
Saying that Red Cross has been performing a commendable services to the people, Dr. Lotha said” As long as human race exist, there will be no end to human misery and agonies and the humanitarian service of the Red Cross Movement will ever be more demanding and needed.
The minister also strongly felt that the people need more motivation and awareness in the service of the society and humanity.
“Most of the time we tend to live by ourselves and not aware of our responsibilities and obligations toward the society and to the fellow being,” Dr. Lotha said.
The minister also stressed on the need to encourage the people especially the young boys and girls in the colleges and schools and tries to involve them in the Red Cross movement so as to inculcate sense of responsibilities and obligations towards the society and to our fellow being.
Earlier, the function, held under the theme “ Our strength, our future, committed volunteer” was chaired by Povotso Lohe, Chairman, IRCSN while Pastor, Chang Baptist Church, Kohima said invocation prayer.
Male voice from Chakhesang Baptist Church presented special number while Rev. Dr. L. Tsanlao, general secretary IRCSN gave the brief background of the World Red Cross Day. The function concluded with vote of thanks tendered by Akhale Khamo, Managing Committee Member, IRCSN.
