Students criticize NU’s Vice Chancellor

Dimapur, September 7 (MExN):  The Naga Students’ Federation and Nagaland University’s Post-Graduate Students’ Union of Kohima today denounced the autocratic functioning of the university officials and negligence of students’ welfare. The students’ organizations expressed strong resentment particularly at the Vice Chancellor, for his autocratic ways and oft-reported humiliation of students.

The Naga Student Federation issued a statement today conveying strong resentment at NU authorities, including the Registrar. The NSF denounced the presence of army personnel inside the university’s campus at the odd hour. “The federation outwardly questions the authority whether such forces were required to threat the innocent students,” a note from the NSF stated. The NSF also denounced the “Friends of the Hill Peoples” (the Assam Rifles) being inside the university. The NSF cautioned that “any such untoward incident meted against the interest of the students’ community the concerned authority shall be solely held responsible.”

Also, the PGSU of Kohima condemned the “irresponsible act of university authorities namely VC and Registrar of NU.” “We also deeply regret for the incidence where university bus met with an accident due to the negligence of the authorities. Strongly supporting the PGSU (L) we voiced out that as to why the VC and the Registrar always play with the career of the students, when the students are ever ready to complete with other university,” a note from the PGSU said. In spite of the demands made by student organizations including the PGSUs and the All Nagaland College Students’ Union, the VC has been functioning autocratically and humiliating students.

“VC always uses his autocratic power and humiliate by denying the rights of the Students. On the Occasion the VC even denied the ANCSU to enter his chamber when the meeting was already fixed. Now the VC is threatening the students’ community using paramilitary force,” the PGSU said. The army personnel were also criticized for involving in the matters of the university “when they are only meant to protect and safe guard the country.” And they have no right to threaten the students, the PGSU said. “Until and unless the students demands are fulfilled we will retaliate and for any future incidence the VC and Registrar will solely bear the responsibilities,” the students added.
