Indore, Jiribam and Chhattisgarh retain top spots; Dimapur & Kohima’s position improve

Nagaland was ranked sixth among the States with less than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), while its two major cities showed an improvement over last year, according to the latest Swachh Survekshan 2021, an annual sanitation survey among cities and towns of India since 2016.

The 2021 survey was released during the felicitation of top performers by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi on November 20 at the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ hosted as part of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

As per the survey, a total of 19 ULBs were considered in the survey and with a total score of 1000, Nagaland was ranked 6th out of 14 States with less than 100 ULBs.

The State’s ranking was best among the North East States, followed by Assam (8), Mizoram (9) and Sikkim (10). Meghalaya was placed last among the 14 states with less than 100 ULBs

Nagaland’s position in the overall ranking also improved marginally from 19 in 2020 to 17 in 2021, out of 28 States. 

Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh retained the top position among states, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. West Bengal was bottom of the list, followed by Meghalaya and Kerala. 

Cities and Zonal Ranking
Meanwhile Indore has now been voted as the cleanest in India for 5th time in a row while Surat (Gujarat) and Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh) were conferred as being the country's second and third cleanest respectively in the National Ranking of cities with populations greater than 10 lakh. 

Out of 48 cities under the category, Kota North was ranked at the bottom, followed by Madurai and Coimbatore. 

In the ranking of 1-10 Lakh cities, Dimapur was placed in 322 out of 372 cities with a score of 1530 points.  As per the survey, the ranking is an improvement over 422 in 2020 and 399 in 2020.  In the category, New Delhi, Ambikapur and Tirupati were ranked first, second and third respectively, while Sasaram, Shillong and Palakkad were at the bottom-three.

Nagaland capital Kohima, slotted in the survey under cities with 50,000 – 1 lakh population, also improved its ranking and was placed at 5th out of 14 such cities in the North East Zone.

In the category, Tezpur was ranked first, followed by Tinsukia and Jorhat while Karimganj was at the bottom, followed by Tura and Lunglei.

In cities under the 25,000 – 50,000 category, Mokokchung was placed at 8th position out of 31 in the North East. Wokha was placed at 12th, followed by Chümoukedima (13), Tuensang (15) and Mon (28). 

Assam’s Golaghat, Kokrajhar and Haflong took the top-three positions respectively in the category. 

In cities below, 25,000 population category, Jiribam in Manipur retained the top position, while Sapatgram and Lakhipur in Assam were placed second and third respectively. 

The performances of town councils from Nagaland in the category, however, was below average, with even the ‘best’ ranked Kiphire placed at 103rd out of 171 such ULBs in the North East. Changtongya followed next at 116th, followed by Naginimora (117). Zunheboto, placed at 159th position, was lowest from the state, while Vairengte in Mizoram was at the bottom of 171 ULBs under the category in the North East. 

In the ranking of districts across India, only Dimapur could manage to score some points but placed at 454th position out of 659 districts.  Zunheboto was at the bottom in the all-India list, followed by Yanam in Puducherry and Wokha. Surat, Indore and New Delhi respectively were the top- three cleanest districts India, as per the survey.
